holders and selected officials (US), dictionary of slang,
advice on financial, legal, social and health issues, and
sections devoted to addresses.

facts, terms and curious beliefs pertaining to lesbians
and at times, women in general. The thematic sections include:
arts and letters, Amazons and other exotics, Switch-hitters
and cross-dressers, lesbians and the law, and global affairs.
Some lists are predictable (lesbian novelists and lesbian
elected public officials) while others such as all-female
animal societies are less so.

This popular compendium in dictionary arrangement covers
a wide and often unpredictable array of subjects to amuse
and inform gay readers. Entries include biographies, incidents,

most curious. Lack of an index precludes easy use for reference.

Nearly 100 lists, primarily concerned with gay men, ranging
from the trivial to the serious; some deal with censorship,
discrimination, and homophobia while others give terms,
language and language use, religion, military, biographical
facts, gay relationships, gay culture or aspects of sex
and sexuality. The 2nd ed. varies quite a lot from the first
edition.

examination of each section. The entries are brief with
citation listed at the end of each section. Sources vary
widely, many are popular sources, and information is often
not based on random samples. It does includes hard-to-find
data but is not definitive. A useful chronological table
of efforts to determine the number of gay people.

This directory seeks to meet the needs of the lesbian,
gay, bisexual, and transgendered community, and is an extensive
listing of that community's organizations, bookstores, presses,
and magazines and service organizations supportive of it.
International in scope, the great majority of organizations
listed are in the US and Canada. Impressive, but not comprehensive
the list is arranged in subject areas: arts and literature,
community, family, health and AIDS, legal and political
action, media action and archives, spirituality and religion,
sports and recreation, work, and youth. Within each group
organizations are presented by country and for the US and
Canada by state and province, respectively. In addition
to directory information some entries include a description
of the organization and statement of its purpose. Each section
includes with online resources: websites, online services,
usernet, the net, and BBS.
